I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I would say simply that watching too many movies during the pandemic has made me jaded, personally. Considering that before then, I would literally only watch one or two movies in the theater a year.
That said, I actually think this has been an unusually good year for animation. So far I’ve enjoyed Luca, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and Vivo. As for anime, I still have to get around to watching Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and basically all the Evangelion Rebuild movies. I may even watch Space Jam: A New Legacy for the wrong reasons, considering that, unlike most ‘90’s kids I always thought the original Space Jam was pretty bad, too.
It could also be that “Rage-Tuber” culture has over-exposed us to bad movies and lazy remakes, which have always existed, but seem more prominent than ever because apparently social media and happiness are not allowed to co-exist. There’s a reason I watch CinemaWins now instead of CinemaSins.
The thing about the OG Space Jam - from someone who thought it was super dull as a preteen when Cartoon Network aired it once - is that it knew subconsciously how bad it was and decided to have fun with mocking itself.
Space Jam II: Warner Boogaloo felt forced and lazy to me, but that's my opinion.
Nice. I should start doing that a little more when Jeremy gets too insufferable.
